Description

Ah Tomach, yes ! Expected a lot from this rocket but nop, has a very nasty roll in the flight ! Fins seems to be warped a bit !! Flies good on lower speeds, but has a severe problem when it reaches Mach 1 speeds !! Rocket is nice looking and I will give the fin issue a try to fix them in the near future. Will give it one more change ! Will probably remove the fins and replace them with 3/16 fiberglass fins. Also removed the switch band on all rockets and installed dual recessed switches...

Cut off the fins - Waiting on Fiberglass fins from Giant Leap Rocketry 1/8" -

UPDATE 12/17/2015 - cut the fin slots with a table saw. need to find small dremmel tool bit to cut out the slots a bit more all the way up to the Motor Mouth...and clean that out.

UPDATE 29/12/2015 - Started installing the fins, keeping them upright and make sure that they have the same distance in between the tips ! One fin at the time tacked in with CA glue. Next day the next fin, checking for alignment and distance with the first fin. After all the 3 fins are installed, they look great and perfect, a job I had never accomplished this close.

UPDATE 01/01/2016 - started tucking in Carbon fiber fabric into the grooves, them brushing in a large quantity of epoxy in there so it is all well soaked ! After that and when dry, I started getting the Carbon fiber over the fins and grooves brushing on the epoxy. When this is dry then a layer of Fiberglass over the fins covering the carbon fiber very well...

And of course sanding in between to get the bumps out !!

UPDATE 01/02/2016 - All dry - sanding, then a last coat of epoxy WITH micro-balloons, thanks Jason for supplying that to me ! Works great. Finish is drying now and looks already very smooth.

UPDATE 01/03/2016 - Sanding day, then applying Rocketpoxy for the fillets, applying blue tape to get it all in control and not so much on the fins ! Rocketpoxy does not sand great !!

UPDATE 01/10/2016 - Weather is still warm, started priming today. So I can see were it still needs bondo to fill in the bumps, and hen lots of sanding again.

UPDATE 01/16/2016 -Also cutting a window for iphone video recording. Wanna take that rocket to GRITS in Georgia in April 2016.

UPDATE 01/22/2016 - Weather is reasonable for painting, just heated up the rocket parts with the hairdryer to make sure. White came out great on the fins and also the single band. Next is waiting a few days (6) for polishing and waxing.

UPDATE 02/014/2016 - Rocket all waxed up and Installed window, all glued in and lined up. window is like 7/8" opening to get a good recording with no banding. Hoping for the best.

UPDATE 02/03/2016 - Rocket all done, rail buttons on and lined up and epoxied ! That rocket is ready to fly next launch ! Good luck Freddy !

UPDATE 09/23/2020 - Rocket came down on motor and I had a hard time getting the casing out, I guess the inner mount got dented a bit. So after getting the casing out I sanded it out with rough sandpaper and after a while it slides in very smooth now again. Also during the flight the metal tip of the nose cone screwed off and got lost. I will replace that and epoxy the new tip on. A few minor cracks in the lower booster at the end of the fins but really nothing major. Indeed rocket landed on the roadway in SRA Palm Bay... Fins are a bit scratched but no repairs there.

Update 12/21/2020 - Nose cone tip ordered from Madcow.

Update 12/30/2020 - Nose cone arrived, metal tip is not a perfect match's, it's bit bigger in diameter but I can make it work with some fiber glassing if I need to, I just screwed it on for now.

Update 10/10/2021 - Fixed the nose cone tip with bondo, will sand and finish painting this week for another flight at SRA. Transition will be smooth.

Update 11/24/2021 - After the last flight this rocket came down ballistic and got lost. Today it was found by Carlos. It was very badly damaged, fin can and part of the booster seems ok and could be rebuild. I will work on this rocket and make it fly again under de new name, Tomach II.

Wow! Amazing rebuild Freddy!

With replacement of the fins, you have given this rocket a second life! I can't wait to see her fly again!
