Description

Just getting this rocket finished to fly on my 1 grain motors, any 6 XL will take it to over mach 1.5 and like altitudes 15 K +...

Rocket still needs so finish work, but will get that ready for the February launch, have that already in the launch sequence line up for now.

Update 02/06/2017 - Rocket is ready, design is painted on and polished and waxed. Could be a better job but no ! I will fly that again In Georgia at Mach 1.4 so there will be some 'expected damage'. This is a fun rocket that has to perform... If it survivethat mach 1.4 trip then the next will be Mach 1.77 the final and Ultimate flight. Pieces to follow.

Update 02/07/2017 - Checked the stratologgers, 700 feet main and Apogee / back up 500 main and Apogee +2 sec. set and check. Also the actual delay is 10.8 and the motor delay is set at 15, so I will keep that delay in the motor also for now, so there will be two back ups.

Update 02/10/2017 - Charges made and loaded, Car loaded, Final stuff will be tomorrow morning. Checklist for on field filed.

Update 02/11/2017 - Launch day - was early on the field, Florence came with me and took a few pictures and video also. Rocket all loaded up and on way to pad... Take of was a bit funny, one grain motor and some windy gusts also, maybe got caught on the way up in the wind and also the rail looked a bit funny... Will re check the stability again. For the rest great flight to almost 3000 feet as simmed. Have to check the velocity, had the impression that it took of slower then the sim calculated. Also I had two stratologgers in the Av Bay and the motor charge as a third back up. The motor charge did not go off.

LOL - I won't fly without feeling my rocket is finished as well. If paint is what I planned on for a rocket, then it won't fly until painted. And, if my rocket has any form of kevlar in the glassing, it definitely will not fly until painted since UV breaks down kevlar.

haha Tim, I was planning to do that (naked)  BUT, have time to finish that painting probably over the weekend... Just a bit puzzled with design for now...

What part of rocket has kevlar? Figure for the amount of time our rockets are in the sun, it would be a long time before sun would have any effect?

I was referring to my rockets. The Nutcracker is nearly 100% kevlar. The EZI is wrapped in Kevlar. The moose (my 50k shot) is 100% kev nose, and outer surfaces of fins will be kev.

I don't know the chemical destruction, but I had unused kevlar that was on a shelf in my garage.  I take out the garbage, and mow the lawn- where it was exposed to sun - other than that it lived in darkness. The kevlar changed color significantly (turned from a yellow to a yellow-brown) and I threw it away. Now I make sure to box the tube of unused.

Why do you use kevlar? Is it lighter than CF? First I have heard of it used on rockets. Thought glass was 1st choice then CF for weight (but expensive).
